THE WICKED READ

By Heather Lang Illustrated by Jordi Solano Published by Albert Whitman & Company ISBN-13: 9780807521878 Age Range: 4 – 8 Years
Before Eugenie Clark’s groundbreaking research, most people thought sharks were vicious, blood-thirsty killers. From the first time she saw a shark in an aquarium, Japanese-American Eugenie was enthralled. Instead of frightening and ferocious eating machines, she saw sleek, graceful fish gliding through the water. After she became a scientist—an unexpected career path for a woman in the 1940s—she began taking research dives and training sharks, earning her the nickname “The Shark Lady.”

THE CREEPY CREATORS

Heather Lang grew up terrified of sharks after seeing the movie Jaws when she was nine years old. She thought sharks were swimming around in the ocean looking for people to eat! While sinking her teeth into lots of research for SWIMMING WITH SHARKS, Heather discovered the truth about sharks. Now she goes scuba diving and snorkeling in search of them. Her favorite sharks are the mysterious great hammerhead and the gigantic whale shark. Heather loves to research and write about ordinary women who overcame extraordinary obstacles and never gave up on their dreams. Her other picture book biographies include, FEARLESS FLYER: RUTH LAW AND HER FLYING MACHINE, THE ORIGINAL COWGIRL: THE WILD ADVENTURES OF LUCILLE MULHALL, and QUEEN OF THE TRACK: ALICE COACHMAN, OLYMPIC HIGH-JUMP CHAMPION. When she is not writing or doing detective work for her next book, she loves to go on adventures with her husband and four children.

Jordi Solano never leaves home without a sketchbook and pencil. He lives in Spain.
